Dear Athletic Trainer or Sports Medicine Staff Student Intern:

The Athletic Trainer Internship Program at the Volleyball Festival provides an excellent opportunity for student and certified athletic trainers to get hands-on experience in the field of athletic training. With over 500 teams from throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and other countries, the tournament provides a multitude of educational experiences. A staff of approximately 25 student and 20 athletic trainers are supervised by an outstanding group of 5 senior staff athletic trainers. You will have opportunities to learn from these professionals with their wide range of experience in the field of athletic training. Additionally, we have a fantastic group of on-site physicians who provide medical care to the athletes as well as education to our staff. Please note that priority hiring is given first to returning members of previous Volleyball Festival staff and to those who are available for the entire tournament with no scheduling conflicts.

The Volleyball Festival competition is held June 28 thru July 1st, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona at the Convention Center with practices on June 26-27 and an Athlete Welcome Party on June 27. Please plan to arrive June 25, 2018. Below is the full schedule.


Monday, June 25

  • ·       All sports medicine staff staying in hotels arrive. Check in is usually available no later than 3:00 PM

Tuesday, June 26

  • Set up 9am – 12:00 pm of AT Facilities (All SM Staff not working Practice)
  • Practice coverage in PM (by selection)
  • Mandatory Sports Medicine Staff Meeting 12:00 - 4:00pm
  • Educational seminar TBD Evening (optional/CEU)

Wednesday, June 27

  • Orientation to Building, Facilities & Operations for Sports Medicine Staff (9:00 AM - Noon)
  • Practice coverage in AM (by selection)
  • Mandatory Welcome Party 6 - 8:30pm (All Sports Medicine Staff Members Work)

Thursday, June 28 - Saturday June 30

  • Tournament competition 8am - 11pm or end of play
  • Work 6:30am - 6pm OR 11 am - 11pm (approximately) depends on end of play

Sunday, July 1

  • Competition 8am - 6pm approximately
  • Finals Noon - 6pm
  • Work 6am - 11am or 11am - 6pm or cover specific championship games and packing up our supplies and facilities etc.

Monday, July 1

  • All staff should schedule to depart on Monday Morning
  •  Hotels are only covered thru Monday Morning

Student Interns must be enrolled in a CAATE Accredited Program and be current in Health Care Provider CPR during the time of the Festival and be First Aid Certified as well.

There are a limited number of positions available for Athletic Trainers and those individuals will be expected to provide mentoring and supervision to the student interns.

Student interns are paid a stipend of $400.00 dollars for the tournament and Athletic Trainers are paid $18/hour in their first year as a Festival AT.  In their second year as a Festival AT, the pay is $21/hour. After that, pay is $23/hour with a maximum of 40 scheduled hours. Scheduled hours could be less depending on daily play and tournament end times.  Over 40 hours has to be approved by a Festival AT Senior Staff supervisor.  Meal stipends are provided for all student interns while working. 1 Meal stipend is provided for AT’s during their shift.   If needed, Housing is provided at no cost with the following understanding:

  • Students are placed in double, triple or quad occupancy as space and rooms dictate
  • Students may request specific roommates and we will try to accommodate, but no guarantees can be made
  • Athletic Trainers are placed in double occupancy unless requesting roommates (up to a max of 4 in a room)

All hotels are full service and within walking distance to the Convention Center. Housing begins Monday, June 25, 2018 and can be provided until the morning of Monday, July 2.  We will have staff meetings on Tuesday June 26, 2018 & a CEU Event. More information on the CEU event will be provided once staff is hired.  Please note that student and athletic trainers are responsible for their own transportation costs to Phoenix, AZ.

Student medical staff interns are given a daily work schedule based on coverage needs. Initial work schedules are distributed at the orientation meeting. However, these schedules can be adjusted as needed by tournament play and flow. Additionally, you are expected to attend the staff meeting and help with the Welcome Party as part of your stipend. Sunday, July 1, 2018 is the last day of play and ends by approximately 6 pm. On that day, we usually finish packing by approximately 9 pm.  We have flexibility in scheduling on the last day, so it is no problem to depart after 7:00 pm but everyone is encouraged to have departing flights in late evening or you can stay in the hotel until Monday, July 2, 2018.

As an added bonus, each year we try to do an optional education seminar before or during the tournament.  However, at this time we do not know the topic or if one will be offered.  If offered, there will be CEU’s available for athletic trainers and an update provided to all accepted staff via email with location time and cost associate with this event.

Final Acceptance decisions are made usually by no later than April 15, 2018.

Once accepted, athletic trainers and student interns are sent a form to submit their request for housing needs, including any roommate requests, and are also asked for other necessary information that may be needed that wasn’t included on the initial application. Please note, athletic training student interns’ schedules need to be flexible throughout the event.  Once contacted of your acceptance, it's important to quickly provide your housing needs and roommate request information.
